OUR CASE RESULTS

1. Commercial Litigation:  Jonathan Barrett, through his firm, Barrett Law, PPLC, successfully recovered over $20,000,000 for 150 farmers and other business owners in their business economic loss claims against British Petroleum (“BP”) due to the 2012 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
2. Whistleblower:  Barrett Law, PLLC represented a whistleblower who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the United States against Dr. Meera Satchdeva and the Rose Cancer Center.  The whistleblower worked at the cancer center and observed the fraudulent billing of Medicare and also the watering down of cancer medications for patients.  The whistleblower worked undercover with the government to provide vital physical evidence and, later, testimony in the matter.  As a result of the whistleblower’s coming forward, the government recovered from Dr. Sachdeva $8,600,000.00 in fraudulent Medicare charges and was able to have the doctor sentenced to a 20 year jail term.  The whistleblower received a percentage of the recovered $8,600,000.00 in Medicare fraudulent charges.
3. Premises Liability: Action brought on behalf of a college student who broke his neck after diving into a large pool at a resort in the Bahamas.  The threshold issue in the case was whether or not the water depth warning signs were adequate.  The case was settled on the eve of trial for over $6,000,000.
4. Wrongful Death:  Jonathan Barrett of Barrett Law, PLLC represented the children of a woman who was struck by a train and killed while walking across a railroad track.  The contested issue was whether or not the train horn was blown.  At trial, the jury awarded the plaintiffs $2,000,000.
5. Breach of Contract:  Barrett Law, PLLC represented a family of farmers who were not allowed by the landowner of the farm to renew their farm lease agreement and continue farming the land.  Suit was brought against the landowner alleging breach of contract; a claim was also brought against a nearby and large farming company alleging tortious interference with a business relationship.  The issues were hotly disputed.  After extensive litigation, the case settled for $810,000.00.
6. Wrongful Death: Barrett Law, PLLC was retained by the family of a person who was killed while living at Ellisville State School (ESS), which is a place run by the State of Mississippi for those of suffer from mental retardation.  The ESS resident, who suffered from spastic quadriplegia, was found with a sock stuffed down her throat.  A bench trial ensued and the judge, after hearing the case, rendered a verdict for the plaintiffs in the amount of $385,000.00.
7. Wrongful Death/Premises Liability:  Barrett Law, PLLC represented the wrongful death beneficiaries of a tenant against his landlord where no fire protection devices were placed in the home by the landlord.  The most the tenant could have possibly received had the case gone to trial was $500,000, with the likelihood that the landlord would have appealed, making it years before the tenant might recover.  And, the case had liability issues because the tenant also had a duty to install fire protection devices.  Through Barrett Law, PLLC’s litigation skills, including the hiring and working closely with several experts, the case settled for $350,000.
8. Product Liabiliy:  Case was brought against an automobile manufacturer where two passengers survived the crash but were trapped in the car and died from smoke inhalation before the car burned due to a fuel fed fire.  Plaintiffs argued that the breach in the fuel delivery system, which was argued to be a manufacturing defect, caused the deaths.  Dealing with significant contributory negligence issues, the case settled for $350,000.
9. Insurance Company Bad Faith:  A hotel sustained a severe fire and the hotel’s insurance carrier refused to timely pay the hotel owner what he believed was the full value of the fire loss claim.  Finally, the insurance company did paid the full value of the claim.  After that, the hotel owner hired Barrett Law, PLLC to file a lawsuit and prosecute the hotel owner’s claims against the insurance carrier for breach of duty of good faith and also for engaging in bad faith by slow-paying the hotel owner for the fire loss.  Barrett Law, PLLC got the insurance company to pay another $325,000 for its delay/slow-paying tactic.
10. Insurance Company Breach of Contract: Fire loss claim brought by a homeowner against its home insurance company was denied.  Jonathan Barrett and his law firm, Barrett Law, PLLC, was retained by the family to prosecute their claim.  Ultimately, the fire loss claim was paid in full by the insurance company, resulting in over $250,000 recovered in insurance proceeds.
11. Medical Malpractice: Barrett Law, PLLC represented a person who had been bitten by a poisonous snake.  After she was bitten, she did not receive antivenin by the hospital that provided care, which she believed caused her injuries to be worse than they would have been had she been timely administered antivenin.  Later, she retained Barrett Law, PLLC prosecute her claim against the hospital.  Liability was hotly disputed between her and the hospital.  Jonathan and his law firm procured $225,000 for her from the hospital.
12. Vehicular Crash Cases:  Jonathan and his firm, Barrett Law, PLLC, have represented many individuals over the years who have been injured in vehicular crashes and have recovered from them millions of dollars in settlements and jury verdicts.
13. Automobile Accident—Insurance Policy Gathering and Stacking.  Barrett Law, PLLC was retained by the parents of a teenager who was killed in an automobile accident.  Using innovative legal techniques, the law firm was able to successfully gather and stack various insurance policies, which included the teenager’s parents’ policies, the owner of the vehicle’s policies, and even the insurance policies of the grandparents’ who lived in a nearby town, in order to recover as much as possible for the bereaved family.
14. Vehicular Crash Case – A person was killed when the speeding vehicle in which he was a passenger crashed into a dump truck that pulled out in front of the vehicle on the highway. Both drivers claimed the other one caused the accident. Jonathan Barrett of Barrett Law, PLLC fought for the wife and child of the person who was killed to be compensated for their loss. Jonathan quickly investigated the crash, interviewed witnesses, and obtained vital evidence. He retained top quality experts to help in the prosecution of the wrongful death claims. Jonathan and his firm were able to settle the case for almost $1,100,000.00, which was virtually all of the insurance money available on both of the vehicles in the crash.
